                                                         THE REAL CONDITIONAL


The real conditionals



Actual conditionals express usual events or conditions that may happen in the future or that usually happen now.

Example:

  • -If she will study, she will pass the test.
  • -I wold be careful if I were you.
  • -I have a lot of money, I'd travel.

Structures of the Real Conditionals:

If + subject + simple present tense + subject + will/can/may/must + verb in base form. . .
Subject + will/can/may/must + verb in base form. . . + if + subject + simple present tense

Example: 

  • If it rains, you will get wet.
  • You will get wet if it rains.
  • If Sally is late again I will be mad.






Example:

  • -If you heat ice, it melts.
  • -Ice melts if you heat it.
  • -When you heat ice, it melts.
  • -Ice melts when you heat it.
  • -If it rains, the grass gets wet.



The unreal conditionals

The unreal conditionals express hypothetical conditions that could not have occurred in the past, present, or future, but describe a situation that could occur.

Example:

  • If I were in New York, I would meet you.
  • If I were rich, I would buy a luxury apartment.
  • Had you participated in the contest, you could have won the first prize.

Structures of Unreal Conditionals:

If + subject + simple past tense + subject + would/could/might + verb in base form. . .
subject + would/could/might + verb in base form + if + subject + simple past tense.

Example:

-If you drove slowly, you would not have any accidents.
-If you studied hard, you would pass your finals. 
-If I saw her, I would give her your message.
